Description

Key Characters: Leaves glabrous, large, ovate, obtuse at apex, truncate at base; Petioles long 1-2 cm.; inflorescence silky canescent; capsule canescent.

Growth Form:

Stems: Bark with light brown and squamaceous, branches terete.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blade ovate or oblong; 8-12 cm. long, 5-8 cm. broad. Apex obtuse. Base truncate or rounded. Upper surfaces glabrous, shining, bright green; lower surfaces glabrous and dull. Margins entire and flat. Midrib strong and stout Petioles 10-18 mm. long. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers in inflorescences of 2–5 pairs of cymules, glabrous or appressed or woolly pubescent; peduncles 7–18 mm long, 1–3 mm wide, pedicels 2–8 mm long, 1–2 mm wide, bracts broadly ovate to suborbicular, 5–10 mm long, 3–5 mm wide; hypanthium 3–7 mm high, 3–8 mm wide. Flowers red, bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic; pedicels of 4-6 mm. Sepals calyx 6 mm., silky canescent, the lobes acute, deltoid, 3 mm., either pruinose or pubescent to glabrous. Petals large dark red, 5 mm., rounded. Stamens 25 mm. long. Ovary nearly superior; style 2.5 cm long.

Fruit: Capsule large; resembling M. macropus; sikly canescent; almost included in the calyx tube; 8 mm. high.
